Recycling Wood Pallets To Make Some Money Or To Save Material Costs For Projects

by Grace Rhodes

Wood pallets are so common that many companies or stores end up with stacks of them and no way to get rid of them. Recycling these used pallets is a great option and can make you a little spending money or save some money when building things that pallet wood is useful for.

Recycling Used Pallets For Cash

There is a market for used pallets in many areas, but recycling them can be difficult because the companies buying the pallets want used pallets in good shape to use for shipping. If the pallet has broken boards on it, they will often reject these pallets, but you can fix them before taking them to the buyer.

If you have an abundance of used pallets, taking the good boards off the pallets that are damaged and saving them will eventually give you some stock to use for repairs on pallets that have just one broken board on it. If the pallet is in good shape otherwise, the few minutes it takes to remove the damaged board and replace it with a new one could mean the difference between selling the pallet or not.

Most pallet buyers will pay four or five dollars per pallet, so the more good ones you can sell, the better. If you have several places to pick up used pallets and a trailer or truck to haul them with, it can be an excellent way to earn some money without a lot of upfront investment. At the same time, recycling the pallets means fewer trees cut to make more, and that can be a great help to the environment.

Using The Wood

Used pallet wood is typically thin and often weathered, stained, or sometimes painted, but it can still be great for rustic projects. Often, the boards from a pallet can make shelves or make great flooring in a rustic shop or cabin.

The wood is often not all the same size and material so fitting it together is not always easy, but making an accent wall or using it to build a headboard or decorative piece for your home can be a great way to take advantage of the mismatched wood. It will take some time to take the pallets apart and match up the materials you want to use, but if you are getting the used pallets for free, it can also save you a lot of money on materials.

If you have a planer and a table saw in your shop, all the mismatched wood can be made the same size, and then you can use it for many different projects, and the weathered wood can offer a beautiful look and feel to the finished project if you choose to keep it.
